The President's Organ says a Negro is Better than some White Men..
March 31, 1871
Summary
A northern newspaper calls Fredrick Douglas better than many white men, and the Dispatch takes great offense to it.
Transcription
TheWashington Republican of Wednesday says: "Fred. Douglass is fit to dine with any man in the land, and he has incomparably better breeding and better sense than half of those who get their meals on the same steamer, and whose only passport to dinner is a dollar bill and a white cuticle." Let white men remember this insult. We call the attention of Northern Democratic papers to it. And we dare Congress to pass any law to put whites and negroes upon an equality at public dinner tables. This "dare " is a safe one ; for no party that should become responsible for such a law would survive a single election.
