Description

To keep or not to keep the iron-clad oath? There is no solution to the oath as of now, but surely there are many opinions. General Schofield notably denounces the oath along with the New York Times. Radical Republicans intend to filter out all ex-Confederates and any current sympathizers with the controversial oath. General Schofield, speaking from experience, warned the Convention that the iron-clad oath will only prevent men of good character who are beyond qualified from holding office in a time when valuable leaders are needed most. Black members of the Convention wanted nothing to do with Schofield and turned against him referring to "King Schofield." Schofield's opposition to the oath is simply "a plan to shape "a Constitution for the white man," while the negro was to be the victim of treachery
