Title
This Week in Reconstruction, April 23-30, 1866
Description
Even after the end of the war, tensions between northerners and southerners remain high. Northern papers such as the New York Tribune look to condemn southerners for acts during the war and after it. These papers frequently report horrific violence in the South in order to demonize Southern culture. Despite this, the Southern economy stabilizes as agricultural output increases and immigrants come to the South to enter the labor force. The Temperance movement also gains momentum, with meeting times and locations reported daily by the Dispatch.
