This Week in Reconstruction, June 1-6, 1869
Description
Richmond celebrates Hollywood Memorial Day this week. On this day, former Confederates remember the lives of fallen soldiers from the Confederate army in "the sweetest, saddest anniversary." Over ten thousand men--brothers, sons, and husbands-- laid down their lives to a "just" cause. In the eyes of white Virginians, these men are immortalized heroes. At the same time, the heated Walker vs. Wells election debates black rights in Virginia. Wells demands more rights for black citizens while Walker demands more sovereignty for white Virginians. Both candidates demand more rights for blacks than white Virginians desire and both candidates oppose the cause former Confederates deemed "just."
