This Week in Reconstruction, July 25-31, 1869

Description

Virginia protested against the slave trade; "she never took part in it." Virginians were simply "victims" who are "despoiled of those slaves whom we purchased after they became slaves." Through the slave industry, we have become addicted to cheap labor, and "now that African slavery is abolished, [a new form] proposes to gratify itself." This new form is coming from China. Chinese immigration will create "mottled populations and degraded average of social character, with the ultimate disasters and calamities." The immigrants will continue to multiply until they destroy the integrity and identity of our nation. It is important to deter this immigration
