Description
Virginians voted in strong opposition of the test-oath. However, the Federal government is still determining whether this iron-clad oath will be required. The Dispatch believes that it would be a fateful mistake to require the oath on two accounts. First, the white Virginians are the most "faithful and intrepid defenders of the Union, the Constitution, and the laws" at the moment, but the test-oath could decrease Virginians' loyal support. Secondly, if the test-oath prevails, the state government will not accurately represent all the citizens of Virginia. During war time, both sides committed atrocities; it is imperative to move towards progress rather than dwelling in the past. This test-oath cloaks our nation in the shadows of the war. President Grant, four of the Cabinet members and the people of Virginia oppose the Test-Oath. Let us move towards progress and abolish this silly oath!
