This Week in Reconstruction, June 13-18, 1870

Description

Citizenship in the United States has grown due to the country's acquiring of Western and foreign territories. As a result, reapportioning representation in Congress is necessary. New apportionment calculations will "[re-district states] between September and the November elections" and will cause Virginia's number of House representatives to increase from eight delegates to nine. The allocation of an additional House delegate will enable Virginia's Conservative majority to elect another national Conservative representative thus expanding the party's national minority influence and voting power. This increase in representation is significant considering the Radical party's national majority control. Additional Conservative representation will allow for the steering of national proceedings, policies, and legislation to better serve southern interests.
