Title

This Week in Reconstruction, June 20-30, 1870

Description

Richmond's City Council has allocated two hundred and fifty thousand dollars to deepen and maintain the James River. The State's self-funding of the project expedites improvements by avoiding area surveys and additional national roadblocks otherwise required to receive national funding. These plans demonstrate the State's proactivity in recovering its weak economy. By refurbishing the James River, steamship travel will grow. This allows for increased transportation that directly impacts the business operations of Virginia by establishing a "great link in the line of commerce between the West and the Atlantic ocean."
