Title
This Week in Reconstruction, February 1-7, 1871
Description
The Richmond Daily Dispatch reported about continued tensions between the North and the South. This was sparked by the appointment of a Congressional committee to help the South's process in Reconstruction. This creates hostilities because both sides have deemed Reconstruction a failure and the South feels like the Union is trying to assert control. This is also seen in through the monitoring of Presidential elections. The Dispatch reported that if there is a difference between the way that voting works in the North and the South, it is unfair and the Union is unnecessarily asserting dominance. This hostility is also seen in a Tribune article that mistakes South Carolina for Virginia. This mix-up is indicative that for northern reporters view southern states as interchangeable.
