This Week in Reconstruction, March 1-7, 1871

Description

The Central Pennsylvania Railroad company has won this round of legal battles, for they won the right to build a rail line from Washington to Richmond. The Virginia companies are going to take it to the senate. The Dispatch criticizes the Pennsylvania company for being self-interested, for they are concerned that they will do disservices to Virginia. Since the "Pennsylvania system of railway secured prosperity for her, so a Virginia system is necessary to secure prosperity to Virginia," and without such system, Virginia is missing out on a vital industry to gain economic prosperity. This is an unfortunate outcome for the city, especially in a time in which Virginia is both extremely bitter and hostile towards the North, and will now control a major railroad through the city.
