Title

This Week in Reconstruction, March 22-31, 1871

Description

Richmond continues to fight for more railroads and methods of connection to other cities, for Richmond wants to reestablish itself as a hub of manufacturing and trade as well as becoming a thriving metropolis in the South. The city wants to achieve this status quickly, since many southern cities are building up their trade and railroads as well. Richmond is going to achieve prosperity through building a bridge across the James River into Manchester. The close connection that will result from the bridge will eventually cause the annexation of Manchester, which would be a great way to expand the city. Richmond is also building more rail lines that will connect Virginia with the west, including routes from Lexington to Louisville. In two years, Virginia will have roads from Baltimore, which will also strengthen connections with the North.
