April 23, 1866

Summary

Tensions between the North and South continue to escalate, as the New York News calls out the "barbarism" of Southern society.

Transcription

An old man, residing in Johnson county, Ill., was recently murdered and buried by two of his children, aged, respectively, thirteen and fifteen years. Suspicion having been excited, and the children questioned, they confessed the murder, and alleged as its cause that their father was old, sickly, and a great trouble to them. What a pity this had not occurred in some southern State, so that our Radical contemporary might have got off another sensation article on the demoralizing influences of slavery and shocking barbarism of Southern society!- New York News
