Passage of the Constitutional Amendment by House.

May 11, 1866

The House decides to pass the amendment proposed by the Reconstruction Committee which takes away the majority of the South's voting rights. White Southerners are in denial of this decision.

The telegraph informs us that the House of Representatives on yesterday, by the decided vote of 128 to 37, passed the amendment to the Constitution proposed by the Reconstruction Committee, including the third section, which disfranchises all "rebels" so far as the election of President and of Congressmen is concerned. We have no room for comment upon this deplorable legislation.
