The conservatives have resoundingly won in the polls. The conservative mayoral candidate, Mr. Keiley, as well as ten other conservatives can claim a victory in the elections. What this means for the city, no one knows just yet. While the Conservatives are rejoicing in their successes, Radicals are both surprised and outraged. All of the effort that the Radicals and the government exerted - sending the army down on election day, stationing soldiers at the ballot locations to "keep the peace" - has failed. In the wake of their victory in the polls, the Conservatives have but one thing on their minds: continuing the push back against the Radicals. The Conservatives seem to think that all signs are pointing their way toward completely taking back the power from the Radicals. We hall the result, therefore, as especially satisfactory at this critical period in the city's history. Mr. Keiley, the Mayor elect, is a lawyer, a man of talents, and a man of great industry and activity. He will devote himself zealously to the public interest. The other tenth-men elected will discharge their duties faithfully, we are sure. There had been some discord and heartburning growing out of the primary elections of nominees for the Conservatives at the last city election and out of other matters that need not be named now; but these troubles were calmed into harmony and union by the excellent spirit of many prominent gentlemen and the proper disposition of the people. The disagreements were threatening - the combination of the different segments upon the Conservative ticket for the good of the city, was ever way creditable and noble, and gives renewed assurance of the fortitude, good faith, and public devotion of the people of Richmond. The victory we have gained is both gratifying and encouraging. We shall be ready to do a great deal better at the next city election.
