Even though most Virginians view Reconstruction as finished, this railroad war that shows power struggles between the North and the South post-unification. The Pennsylvania company wants to control the road between Richmond and Washington, which would create great profits for the Virginia company in Richmond if they had control over it. The disagreement was taken to court, where The Fredericksburg, Richmond and Potomac Company was given rights to build the rail from Alexandria to Richmond. Although this was a victorious motion for Virginia, it created further resentment against the North and further feelings of feeling controlled. The speech is the wall of the deceived northern people, who pluming themselves: for awhile upon having suppressed the greatest insurrection the world had ever witnessed, now find that they are themselves bound fast in the same chains which they forged for our limbs. The readers of the Dispatch need not be reminded that we have supposed all along that the Government must run down into a despotism; or, rather, as we said five years ago, before the first of the reconstruction measures had been adopted, the people of this country will find out that the principles for which the South fought are the true principles of free government, and will confess that they are such, or the Federal Government- will become a despotism. There was and is no other result possible. Congress had no right to pass the enforcement act. It merely usurped the power. But that is what it has been doing for nearly ten years. "We need not trouble ourselves to make a great outcry on the subject at this late day, though we cannot read such speeches as that of Mr. Eldridge without sympathizing with their utterances. Tho northern people supported at the ballot-box year after year Congressmen who had set at defiance the limitations of the Constitution and trampled under foot every principle of free government. We would have preserved both the one and the other, but were not permuted so to do. But we will not taunt our brethren with their blindness and folly. Read what Mr. Eldridge says on the subject.
