Emigration statistics show a relative lack of emigrants arriving in Virginia compared to the rest of the South.

The number of emigrants who have arrived within the United States in the months of November and December of the past year was thirty-eight thousand three hundred and fifty-seven. Of these, one hundred and twenty came to Virginia, eight went to North Carolina, thirty-eight to South Carolina, eight to Georgia, two hundred and ninety to Kentucky, three hundred and fifty-two to Maryland, thirty-five to Louisiana, three to Mississippi, three thousand three hundred and fourteen to Missouri. Not a very encouraging exhibit.
