What will come upon the South if she Refuse to Adopt the Amendment

November 2, 1866

Summary

The New York Post published an article that says the traitors from the South will be punished with death for their treason and their property confiscated if they do not ratify the amendment. This is the sort of article that the Dispatch said was a waste of time to publish because the South is against the amendment and won't be swayed by fear.

What will come upon the South if she Refuse to Adopt the Amendment. Special dispatch to the Chronicle. Philadelphia, October 31.--The New York Post of this evening contains a powerful leader, telling the South that if they do not adopt the amendment the law punishing treason with death and confiscating rebel property will certainly be enforced. The Post, after much strong argument, concludes with these words; "If the men who led the way in the great treason insist on being hanged or expatriated, they may yet have their will, and that sooner than they think." As the Post was one of the Conservative organs, its course is the more significant.
