Constitutional Amendments
March 12, 1866
Summary
Southerners are outraged over legislation that would further "disenfranchise" Southern white men and extend suffrage rights to men of all races.
Transcription
One of the latest amendments is proposed by United States Senator Poland. (What a misnomer!) He proposes to disfranchise all the people in the South who took part in the war against the United States. The remainder of the population would be next to nobody. Now the fanatics have but to extend suffrage to all "loyal" citizens, irrespective of color, and we have a black Government. Well, let them hammer away. The more violent they are the nearer we come to the solution of present difficulties.
